Building a referral program clients actually join

Referral programs fail for a boring reason: most of them ask a client to do work (share a link, explain the product) for a reward that isn't worth the effort.

The combination that tends to work is simple — a meaningful, recurring reward for the referrer, and a real first-purchase discount for the person they refer, so both sides have a reason to act instead of just one.

We see this most often with Refer a Friend paired with a one-time coupon on the referred customer's first invoice: the existing client gets ongoing account credit, and their friend gets a clear, immediate reason to convert instead of just bookmarking a link.

The last piece is visibility — surface the referral link inside the client area itself, not buried in a one-time welcome email nobody reopens six months later.
